John Wojtowicz, a Vietnam veteran and former Chase Manhattan teller, orchestrated a 1972 bank robbery in Brooklyn to fund gender-reassignment surgery for his lover, Ernest Aron. The heist, inspired by *The Godfather*, turned into a 14-hour standoff with police, media, and hostages. Despite limited cash seizures ($38,000), Wojtowicz's actions sparked global media attention and inspired the 1975 film *Dog Day Afternoon*. After serving five years of a 20-year sentence, he leveraged his notoriety by posing at the bank in a 'I Robbed This Bank' shirt. His story highlights themes of personal struggle, media sensationalism, and the intersection of crime and identity. Wojtowicz's later life included legal troubles and a legacy tied to both the robbery and its cultural impact.
