The Pope's Two Bodies not merely history, say medievalists.
Pope Leo XIV says the pope doesn’t take sides in tomorrow’s Villanova–Notre Dame game in Rome.

Robert Prevost, he admits, has another opinion.

stop 👏 making 👏 medievalists 👏 relevant 👏
this could grow into an incredible bit. "The Pope knows that all are children of God. Robert believes that fuck the Packers."

Nice to see a Viking ship in our local Dragon of Shandon 🎃parade, and thanks FranBrooks and Suzanne for the pics!

Medievalists: if you photographed a Viking costume this Halloween, do send it via the #iViking app. It all helps us to understand the popular perception of the Vikings!

Wow. I didn't know that either.
You really know your stuff when it comes to German medievalists during the Nazi era, Len. I remember you posted some interesting things about Wilhelm Levison on your old account.

Medievalists/ early modernists of bluesky!

I’m currently working on a couple of texts that recount the funeral of Anne of Brittany. While reading Jean-Luc Deuffic’s edition of Pierre Choque’s text on the subject, I stumbled across this!

California is probably the most famous example of transforming land with a peninsula into an island in medieval literature, but it is not the only one. If there are any medievalists who know why this happened, please tell me or recommend a text to read. #medievalsky
Because of my little kid insisting California is an island, we found out that on early maps, California was drawn that way.

Over here it’s all medievalists or historians of the nineteenth century, but there’s been some (understandable?) difficulties till recently in studying the deep connections of the polities of the Western Med with Africa and the Indian Ocean before the “Age of Discovery”: too many languages.

Saviez-vous que les sorciers sont d'abord ceux qui... tirent au sort ?

Eh oui, il y a un lien fondamental entre la magie, la divination et le hasard.

... not at all w/ what I've said about ♀️'s llteracy; about vernacularization & the gendering of medical audiences; about the marginalizing of ♀️ in the medical professions. And so many medievalists still pay little attention to Jewish history. If people read only 1 thing, I'd want it to be Floreta!

One other note - many of the dudes on this chart would not, I think, describe themselves as scholars of ancient gender and sexuality, but are prominent enough that they're cited in these dissertations anyhow, whereas most of the women and nonbinary people (yes, of course Butler is coded NB) might.

When you're in the depths of postdoc applications, sometimes you need to return to the medieval sites to spark the love again. I am absolutely obsessed with the frescos above the cadaver sculpture for Alice Chaucer's tomb at Ewelme!

#medievalists is this type of art common for medieval tombs?
