Newest watercolor in time for Christmas, is Megaloceras. This scene takes place in early fall, when deer shed the velvet from their antlers. 🦌 #sciart #paleoart

Shout out to my girl the STAG-MOOSE! No one talks about them and they’re so much cooler than megaloceras, sorry, not sorry!
As MUCH as I love them, Woolly mammoths and sabertooths are too overused in fantasy. I even bequeathed my beloved wooly rhino into the arms of extinction. But I still have these prehistoric weirdos walking around in Kieran’s world (or things related to them, at least.)

Today's four random pieces of palaeoart:

Johan Egerkrans' Anurognathus, Maurice Wilson's Cynognathus, Charles Knight's Megaloceras, and @rebdart.bsky.social's Triceratops!

We had a very enjoyable trip to Crystal Palace Park today to visit the newly restored prehistoric creatures and geological illustrations. We were unanimously impressed! It’s great to be able to see everything so clearly #urbangeology #crystalpalacedinosaurs @cpdinosaurs.bsky.social

I think about this guy every month. People get so hung up on megaloceras that they miss out on this big boy.

Y'know it's fitting that Megaloceras went extinct in part due to their antlers being too big. The Irish elk killed by their big Irish heads.

#Inktober Day 5.

Prompt: Deer

A skeleton of a megaloceras, also known as the “Irish Elk” (a misnomer since it is neither specifically Irish nor is it an elk), an extinct species of deer that used to range across Eurasia.

Great to see #Megaloceras hitting the limelight, the fine specimen in the entrance of the Museum Building @tcddublin rather hid in the shadows on the HOGG conference tour 2023, but has been a part of the 'furniture' since excavation from Lough Gur in the late 19thC. View here shorturl.at/2ae11

That’s the same thing as a megaloceras (though they were more closely related to fallow deer than to elk.) Cool but I like the antlers of Stag-Moose more.

Close-ups of the individual panels/floors.

Each level reads from bottom to top, left to right, and represents a different stage of Earth history. Can't remember why I never colored them (either I didn't want to after coloring the background or just ran out of time.)
