Was there anything in the biometrics that was atypical for Redwing? If not I’d lean towards melanism. If it were a hybrid with Blackbird for example I would expect to see something other than the dark pigment coming through from the Blackbird.

Then finally I'll be raffling off these kids. They were a pair i made to experiment on how I'd do Albino/Melanism and basing them off the Chinese New Year animal at the time. Got 'visible' and 'breeding' colors

They have quite a few that look black in the Monterey, CA area. They're eastern gray squirrels or fox squirrels with a genetic trait called melanism. Sadly, CA has seen various epidemics of mange that kill native squirrels 😭 They're coming back now, though.

Two hatchlings show different pigmentation: one has characteristics consistent with albinism, while the other has dark coloration. Without additional information, it cannot be confirmed that the latter has melanism, based on the available image.
