Researchers believe they've recorded potentially the first-ever sighting of an adult abyssal fish, Melanocetus johnsonii, in broad daylight.
Normally found at depths between 200 and 2,000 meters, this predator was spotted just 2km off the coast of Tenerife.

Researchers believe they've recorded potentially the first-ever sighting of an adult abyssal fish, Melanocetus johnsonii, in broad daylight.
Normally found at depths between 200 and 2,000 meters, this predator was spotted just 2km off the coast of Tenerife.

Registraram, possivelmente pela primeira vez, uma fêmea adulta viva de peixe-pescador abissal Melanocetus johnsonii, perto da superfície em Tenerife, Ilhas Canárias espanholas. Não se sabe por que ela estava nesta área. Ela pode viver em profundidades de até 2000 metros. Ela morreu e foi coletada.

The one picture everyone uses of this phenomenon is of Melanocetus johnsonii, which is one of the few anglerfish that doesn't.

In 2014, MBARI recorded what we believe was the first-ever video footage of the black seadevil alive and at depth.
This little angler (Melanocetus johnsonii) was about 9 centimeters (3.5 inches) long and was recorded at 600 meters (1,969 feet) in the Monterey Canyon. @bittelmethis.bsky.social
