The woolly cap is a 𝗖𝗲𝗽𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘂𝗺 — a specialized flowering structure on mature Melocactus. Once it forms, the body stops growing, and all flowers and fruit emerge from the cephalium.

This winter I noticed something strange happening on the cephalium of this Melocactus 🤔

I’ve never seen it do this before…

Green Melocactus cactus with prominent ribs and long spines, topped with a cephalium. The cephalium has an unusual thick, pale, fuzzy growth forming on top, with reddish bristles around it. The plant is growing outdoors in a gravel garden.

Today’s cactus harvest: Melocactus “pepper pods” 🌶✨

Not spicy, but they sure are eye-catching!

Ich war stark versucht mir einen hiervon zu kaufen: ein Melocactus. Eine ideale Zimmerpflanze fürs Südfenster. Der Pflanzenkörper wächst ab einem gewissen Punkt nicht mehr. Danach wächst nur noch der rote Büschel oben. Im hohen Alter sieht es aus, als trüge er einen Zylinder, siehe zweites Bild. 🤭
6 Stück Melocactus mit typischem rotem Cephalium. Einer 10 Euro. Sehr alter Melocactus mit riesigem rotem Cephalium.

omg, the SDCSS club pins I designed are IN. Cute!!! (plus my original drawz). Very happy with these. The USA will probably collapse before I have a chance to distribute the Melocactus, but you know what, uhhhh let's hope for the best lmao
Six circle enamel pins, one large and five smaller. The large one reads "CSSA 2025 San Diego" and features a Dudleya on a cliff. The smaller pins feature a Huernia zebrina, Opuntia basiliaris, Boophane disticha, Melocactus azureus, and Lithops sp., and are the pins for the SDCSS club years 2024, 2025, 2026, 2027, and 2028, respectively. A small and colorful haworthiopsis attenuata in a red and white pot. A stapelia gigantea about to bloom with its first ever carrion flower! The top of a Melocactus matanzanus with its large red cephalium. Two pink seed pods are growing on top. A mix of Medusa and pink witch aeoniums doing their fall stretch. They do this every year for some reason!

My melocactus greeted me with the tiniest of flowers. Melocacti are not the easiest, they dislike being dry and most of all hate the cold. They grow this fuzzy "cephalium" on top, which hosts their little flowers and fruits and looks like a birthday cake.
