Meet Nero, the lion resting on one of Highgate Cemetery's wondrous tombs.
George Wombwell (1777-1850) was a menagerist, one of earliest showmen to tour exotic animals + breed lions in captivity.
All well below current standards, but w a place in history.
On @cbalondon.bsky.social visit.

30 years since the first date with the love of my life! We celebrated with a lovely trudge around the west side (ie. the fancy bit) of Highgate Cemetery and lunch afterwards at Lauderdale House café. 🪦🩶

A tardigrade-inspired monstrosity just casually doggy paddling its way through our reality.

I love the chubby little arms on this beastie.

Our local cemetery in Highgate, North London has a superb sleepy lion, Nero, marking the grave of a Victorian menagerist, George Wombwell, who travelled the country showing his animals.

My two big things I’m working on are a new album cover for my OC Ibari (it’s in the ugly stage, be patient with me!) and slowly bringing my Renn Fair costume - as a monster vendor known as The Menagerist - to life by way of sculpted, hand-painted upcycled pieces. Now I’m making eyeball flowers.

Some of my favourite graves at Highgate Cemetery were the ones decorated with animals. Nero the lion belonged to a menagerist and the huge (apparently life sized!) dog belonged to famous Victorian prize fighter Tom Sayers.

For a change - going through my photos, found this one: there are a number of animal tombs in Highgate Cemetery but most are C19th (including confusingly, a dog called Lion, and an actual lion on the menagerist Wombwell's tomb) - this one, with a sleeping cat, for Anna Clare Bootle, is 1985
