Listening to Jeremy Holmes talking about defensive spirituality vs mentalising spirituality and it’s so good.

This is how I’ve seen religion and spirituality for a long time. It’s the *relationship* with it that we need to pay attention to.

Using a novel mentalising paradigm, three established executive function (EF) tasks and structural equation modelling, we tested how EFs relate to mentalising:

🧠 Memory updating
🚫 Interference resolution
🔀 Set shifting

The results? Their contributions were subtle and highly specific.

🧠 Better memory updating was associated with slower perspective-taking judgements.

🚫 Faster interference resolution was associated with slower false-belief judgements.

🔀 Set shifting showed no effects.

Executive functions may support mentalising in more selective ways than often assumed.

Children referred to mental health services often experience overlapping emotional and behavioural difficulties—anxiety alongside anger, sadness alongside conflict—yet treatment can focus on a single diagnosis. The ERiC trial set out to address that gap. https://bit.ly/45JlQ27

How can mentalising support regulation?

Mentalising is the capacity to interpret one’s own and other people’s behaviour in relation to underlying mental states. The ERiC model proposes strengthening mentalising should support emotion regulation. https://bit.ly/45JlQ27

So please, if you're talking to the press, don't use mentalising terms for LLM "agent" behaviour.

It isn't like saying your printer doesn't want to print today, because there isn't a massive hype industry telling people printers are going to take over the world.
