Perché au-dessus du Guadiana, Mértola cachait un secret bien pratique... son fleuve. Dernier port navigable avant les terres intérieures, ce fut un carrefour de commerce dès les Phéniciens et les Romains. Un village blanc endormi, jadis vraie plaque tournante.

Plus haut, sur le Guadiana, Mértola s'accroche à sa colline. Un port fluvial qui remontait jusqu'à la Méditerranée, convoité des Phéniciens aux Maures. On l'appelle la ville-musée : tu montes une ruelle, tu changes de siècle. Le fleuve, lui, coule en bas.
