A particularly beautiful example of this type of Olmec carving in jade! This is an Olmec "were-jaguar" figure, characterized by its cleft head and snarling mouth, often carved from greenstone or jade. The figure is likely from the Middle Formative period, roughly 900–400 BCE. Such sculptures are prominent examples of pre-Columbian art from the Gulf Coast region of Mexico. The Olmec "were-jaguar" is a composite mythological being combining human and jaguar features, derived from Old English were (man) and jaguar. It represents a central supernatural deity or spirit symbolizing divine political power, rain, and the fierce life-giving forces of the Mesoamerican jungle. Many scholars believe the were-jaguar embodies an early rain and agricultural god, with the cleft head symbolizing a crack in the earth or a cloud bearing water. Early archaeological theories suggested it represented the offspring of a mythical mating between a human and a jaguar. Olmec elite rulers used the were-jaguar motif to link their lineage to divine, apex predator energy, justifying their political dominance. It may symbolize shamans or rulers transforming their spiritual state into a powerful feline essence during rituals.
