Visited Sam A. Baker State Park for a quick fall overnight backpacking trip. Really nice oak/pine old growth. Told some spooky stories about gap dynamics and mesophication around the campfire.

Really cool paper. The eastern US is often thought of as the "wet" side of the country, but fires were frequent and large and intentional, historically. And even as reduced fire contributes to mesophication, drought intensification means severe fires can still occur.

the eastern US has more tree canopy cover than it did at any prior point, and while thats probably neutral news for climate, the effects on biodiversity are ruinous

there are some west-facing river bluffs near me that have some very nice dry land species but are getting shaded out by wet-loving species as fire has been excluded.

The southern Blue Ridge is not the only place where oak and oak-hickory forests are being lost to mesophication; it is happening here in southern Michigan as well. The use of fire is frowned upon in this region and we must rely upon mechanical treatments to open forests up and admit more light.
