Like many methodologists, I often find myself arguing with someone that their method/epistemology makes no sense. That someone thinks I am arguing against their *conclusions*. But I am arguing they have no justification for their conclusions. Is there a philosophical term for this problem/confusion?

To their credit actual statisticians and methodologists have been sounding the alarm about this for a while, screaming that you can’t just think “lower p: more gooder”, you have to actually *do science* to determine what that estimator is showing in the world of atoms.

Grad school tip: after you take your advanced methods seminar, make sure to publish anything using those techniques in the next 6-8 months, before the methodologists decide everything you learned was actually bad.

What’s amusing is in both cases, the right interface is a discussion of error with no real numbers.
Forecasters seem to be catching on. Eg, I was curious who’d win so went to Silver’s site. Found some irritating nuance, no answers. Left feeling I’d wasted time. It felt like the right transaction!

In defense of the high entropy election forecasting meta, there is a difference between 1) collecting the data, crunching the numbers and saying it’s not clear what’s going on, and 2) just saying we don’t know.
