These bacteria were *eating* that stuff - and therefore scrubbing the fog's water vapour clean of toxins linked to smog and human respiratory problems.

A tiny, temporary anti-pollution factory, working to keep our air breathable.

Amazing!

Growth and formaldehyde degradation of photoheterotrophic Methylobacterium within radiation fogs | mBio
While bacteria are common in the atmosphere, their activity in situ has remained unclear. Using stagnant radiation fogs as new study systems where sampling is optimal, the dynamics, composition, cellular characteristics, and metabolic rates of fog water microbiomes, dominated by Methylobacterium sp., show that they are a hub of active detoxification of atmospheric formaldehyde and likely growing in situ on the basis of heterotrophic or photoheterotrophic metabolism of volatile C1 compounds, with implications for atmospheric chemistry and fog harvesting as sources of freshwater.

"...Methylobacterium was the most abundant microbe in fog water. It accounted for up to half of all microbes present.

To grow in fog...those Methylobacteria must have found something in it to eat. This microbe is known to consume carbon-containing chemicals, such as formaldehyde."

New preprint up now! It’s a tale of two scrappy friends: a melanized yeast and a pink methylobacterium, trudging through their harsh reality as inhabitants of an alpine “biological soil crust”, sharing resources to live together where they could not live alone.

Inspiring, if I do say so myself!
Crusty-Pinky: A Novel Polyextremotolerant Fungus and its Methylobacterium Symbionts Could be an Essential Symbiosis for the Biological Soil Crust Consortium
JF2 08-2F Crusty is a novel melanized polyextremotolerant fungus isolated from a biological soil crust, which we believe harbors Methylobacterium spp. endosymbionts, called Pinky. Crusty is capable of...

This was posted on the “other” site a little over a year ago and for some reason, is getting noticed again. 🤔

Anyway, these are otherwise axenic Arabidopsis seedlings that (left) were inoculated with a Methylobacterium isolate or (right) left untreated.

Pretty obvious difference, right?!?!

Methylobacterium extorquens & buddies use rare earth elements, mostly cerium, to help nom methanol. The Martinez-Gomez lab at Berkeley is repurposing the binding strategies they use for rare-earth element recovery to do things like recycle gadolinium from post-MRI piss.
