And here's the holotype of Tecovaserpeton perfectum in person!

Just in time for #FossilFriday: a new genus of metoposaur at UMMP.
The second I am calling Tecovaserpeton perfectum, and it is known (not surprisingly) primarily from the Tecovas Fm in TX. Its holotype was originally named Buettneria perfecta by Case in 1922, and it is a shockingly "perfect" specimen aside from being squished and missing the tabular horns.

Back to the Thursday collection routine after a chaotic few weeks. Today, some visiting researchers were studying this phytosaur and metoposaur material collected by E. C. Case in UMMP's early days.

Finally something my esoteric knowledge can help with - the site is more often called Sierrita de la Cruz and is thought to be the same bonebed (or at least horizon) to a monodominant metoposaur bonebed reposited at the Panhandle Plains Museum: books.google.com/books/about/...

Nature contains a surprising number of toilet-shaped things*, it’s nice to know a few actually are.

*Specifically thinking of how paleontologists painted the skull of a large amphibian (metoposaur) on the seat of a portable toilet because of the resemblance

That one is also Anaschisma, I unfortunately became a metoposaur expert about 2 yrs too late or I would have changed the sign. "Buettneria howardensis" has been a synonym of the now defunct "Buettneria perfecta"/"Koskinonodon perfectus" for ~70 yrs, I assume they just read it off the catalogue card

Nice work! But now I’m wishing that half metoposaur skull in that hill had been an aetosaur 😂

most. despite the easy prey, Chiniquodon had competition in the form of several unnamed predators, like a Phytosaur, a kind of crocodile like reptile that existed for 28 million years, a Metoposaur, an ancient amphibious tetrapod that would die out at the end of the triassic, and a Stereospondyl-
