Trump admin eliminating access to many microdata sets that economists use

Probably not intentional, just the bumbling fumbles of unqualified appointees

Effect is the same
From former U.S. Census Chief Scientist John Abowd on LinkedIn, what Census data products are affected by Commerce's new policy?

A devastating set of answers including all ACS Public Use Micro Samples

New for the Vibecession Debate. Working paper argues that using microdata to get household-specific inflation rates (rather than aggregating first like CPI), you find

-lotta variation in household inflation
-greater avg inflation during price upturns
-lower real wages for lower income people

There's also a fun lesson here for the microdata heads: trying to answer these types of questions with just aggregate data is *way harder* than just using appropriate microdata. If you have the microdata, all you need to do is calculate some summary stats, if you don't you need to build a model.

If you want to really feel the housing crisis, browse the Census microdata for LA households with lots of people in them. About 16,000 houses in LA County have three bedrooms and 8+ people.

one of the most fuck ass charts I've ever made. I love census microdata
a sort of contrived metric you can put together is how much have renters in 1bdr apartments paid in rent over time, broken out by the decade their building was built. it's a bit of a random walk -- rents are a down a lot in new 2010s buildings, but also in cheap 70s apartments

Using 20 years of nationwide mortality microdata + wet-bulb temperature, we uncovered fascinating new findings. Thread 👇
