Now even our dogs are less safe. Doge cut the Michigan-based NOAA team that monitors & alerts water treatment plants to toxic microcystin which has "been known to kill dogs, birds, and livestock and cause nausea, diarrhea, and vomiting in people."

How will your vote improve this?

"In 2026... 27 out of 39 (69%) state park beaches had at least one E. coli or microcystin advisory between Memorial Day and Labor Day... a record amount of lost recreation and swim time at Iowa beaches due to degraded water quality."

Thank you, IA Enviro Council!

Congratulations to Laura! PhD student #8 leaving the group, and part of the “second gen PhD students” who started their work with me at the University of Halle. Despite a rocky start through Covid lockdowns, she did a great job characterizing #microcystin derivatives! #proudPI

Clams can integrate all sorts of toxins from the phytoplankton they eat. Some prominent marine ones include paralytic shellfish poisoning, amnesic shellfish poisoning, and diarrhetic shellfish poisoning, among others. In freshwater they can accumulate microcystin, which damages the liver. (362)

Pinto Lake near my home has been so full of microcystin as a result of algal blooms that for some periods you weren't allowed to touch the water at all, much less swim in it. This thread echoes the discussions that the city has had for years.

That's profoundly horrible. This is almost certainly a cyanobacteria bloom. When cyanobacteria stress out or die, they release hepatotoxins (like microcystin). Those ducks are as good as dead already.
