We investigated and identified several skin-derived bacteria that antagonize common pathogenic species: www.nature.com/articles/s41...

A cool highlight was that bacteria from feet, where fungi are particularly diverse, tended to be more broadly antifungal than those from other body sites! #microevo
Large-scale investigation for antimicrobial activity reveals newly-identified defensive species across the healthy skin microbiome - Nature Communications

70% of known antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) circulate on food products, with 40% of these ARGs on mobile elements (mostly plasmids), mostly belonging to two major pathobionts (Acinetobacter and Staph spp). Important summary stats on the resistome! #MicroEvo #AMR

Excellent piece on misconceptions of speciation 🤦
doi.org/10.1093/evolinnean/kzae029
1. Species can be clearly defined
2. Speciation is good
3 Species-poor lineages are ancestral/primitive
4 Speciation is strictly tree-like
5 microevo is unimportant
6 Trait differences must contribute to speciation
My entire team wrote an opinion paper about Common misconceptions of speciation research. Each section is written by 1-2 team members. The bulk of the writing happened during two writing retreats. It was a lot of fun and I am very happy with the result. academic.oup.com/evolinnean/a...
Common misconceptions of speciation
Abstract. Speciation is a complex process that can unfold in many different ways. Speciation researchers sometimes simplify core principles in their writin

Genomic rearrangements occur at varying rates across Archaea and Bacteria, but are typically enriched near the ori region. While gene synteny is widely conserved, some species show highly flexible genomic layouts. #Microevo #evolution #genomics

The core genomic backbone of bacteria is not necessarily resilient to gene flow! A new study shows that introgression impacts, on average, 2% of the core genes of species - www.nature.com/articles/s41... #microevo #microeco #evolution
Introgression impacts the evolution of bacteria, but species borders are rarely fuzzy - Nature Communications
It is commonly thought that bacterial species borders tend to be fuzzy, due to frequent exchange of DNA. Here, Diop et al. quantify the patterns of gene flow between core genomes across 50 major bacte...

Genome-wide sweeps create ecological units in the human gut microbiome - Nature
Genome-wide selective sweeps commonly occur in the human gut microbiome and can spread across the world within decades to produce epidemic-like population structures.

I would make the elipses overlapping.
Some microevo and macroevo processes are a bit overlapping.
Also ecology timescale is same as rapid microevo timescale and they feedback each other.

This is more complex to explain bit to me more accurate and satisfying

Genetic exchange shapes ultra-small Patescibacteria metabolic capacities in the terrestrial subsurface | mSystems
Genomic fluidity and diversity in bacteria are mainly governed by horizontal gene transfer (HGT), leading to a variety of genome structures and physiological diversity. The predominantly uncultivated ...
