#microevolution
it’s very much the “microevolution is real and macroevolution is fake” thing that creationists do
July 7, 2026 at 3:53 PM
With respect to the subject of the evolution of species-- there is NO SUCH THING as "microevolution" or "macroevolution".
THERE IS ONLY EVOLUTION.
That is all.

We have exciting new rhetorical tactics emerging around this stuff! It's important to recognize them and call them out.

This is very similar to a creationist approach. No amount of "microevolution" is "macroevolution", and therefore evolution isn't real.

Any multicellular creature absolutely can develop cancer, which in its essence is just the fall of cooperation and re-emergence of selfishness at cellular level by means of sub-microevolution.
I don’t know who needs to hear this, but sharks absolutely get cancer.

Even if sharks didn’t get cancer, eating shark wouldn’t cure your cancer any more than eating LeBron James would make you better at basketball.

That there's a distinction between "microevolution" and "macroevolution."

Microevolution among bacterial strains is fascinating, but there's reasons I didn't pursue microbiology after my undergrad.

Stephen J Gould (1985) talked about the "tiers of time" with macroevolutionary dynamics distinct from short-time microevolution.
But did you know that macroevolution itself shows qualitatively different dynamics at different time scales?

4 years ago, @anjaligupta.bsky.social spent a summer in Lund and collected amazing data of #damselflies. Now, the data/results are published doi.org/10.1093/jeb/... @jevbio.bsky.social ky.social. My highlight: we proposed a way to relate present-day selection #microevolution with #macroevolution.

They believe in Social Darwinism but not Actual Darwinism. Those who even bother to think about it probably justify it as believing in “microevolution” but not “macroevolution”, which is basically like believing in inches but not miles.

But in some respects it's quite dangerous and leads to quite problematic conclusions, like the sharp line that some creationists want to draw between "microevolution" and "macroevolution". The first is fine, they say—sure, populations change over time...

Somewhere between Reaganomics and Mar-a-Lago, microevolution took a wrong turn toward the worst traits: fear, spite, love of guns and the inability to pronounce 'nuance' without spitting. If humans are around long enough, we will be two different species.
