Commission debates Bayou mixed‑use district, short‑term rental and motel rules in UDC update
Staff and commissioners discussed proposed Unified Development Code (UDC) amendments establishing a Bayou Mixed Use district, permitted uses (restaurants, micromanufacturing, limited short‑term rentals), and removing motels from permitted uses; commissioners weighed conditional use versus limited‑use pathways and community engagement for waterfront development.

The Knights of Labor project of building a countereconomy of worker co-ops failed because large-scale factory production was replacing artisan production, and the capital outlays were prohibitive. But today micromanufacturing and open-source hardware have the potential to reverse that trend.

Separate "fast/heavy" from "slow/light" traffic with "protected and connected" bike path superhighways. Promote MOM - MicroManufacturing OpenSource MicroMobility. Micro Manufacturing/local manufacturing/distributed manufacturing means that small local shops can build and maintain shared designs.

This is such an underreported issue. It'll affect so much more than just us 3d printing nerds. It's a straight-up attack on micromanufacturing in general.
California bill AB 2047 mandates 3D printers analyze each print. These scans are only feasible through cloud-connected AI scans, a surveillance apparatus that’s prone to misuse and will chill lawful speech. Creators deserve better. www.eff.org/3DPrintCA
Reject California’s Attack on 3D Printers
California lawmakers are advancing A.B. 2047 in the State Assembly within the next few weeks. The impact is surveillance, manufacturer lock-in, and censorship for all creators and in the state.

LEV's are so simple that they can be micro-manufactured by small independent shops for local communities. MicroManufacturing OpenSource MicroMobility (MOM).

I agree with @parismarx.com. AI may be useful if rebuilt from the ground up and integrated into projects like the Open Source Ecology/Factor E Farm micromanufacturing initiative, and municipalist projects like Cooperation Jackson. But "new wine in old bottles" models like the left-accelerationist...

Hoping for a scenario like Cory Doctorow's Makers, where abandoned shopping malls are turned into villages/cohousing projects that combine home, public spaces, open-source micromanufacturing workshops, etc., with solar panels on roof, cisterns for runoff, and parking lots covered with raised beds.
Someone has sure already made this observation but the fact they can convert all those empty warehouses into prison camps means they could have converted them into housing, community centers, job training centers or, hell, libraries or schools all along. It’s always a matter of will not resources.

No need for alarm. I don't have the tools to fabricate them (a CNC machine, ideally) & 3D printed plastic won't do it, so they will continue to exist in virtual form. However, micromanufacturing gets cheaper every year and you never know what the next "This is the future liberals want" meme will be.

what if aggregating our collective skills and knowledge as a society is actually putting the means of production directly into more peoples hands. arbitrary media, computational tools, and micromanufacturing now ready to allow individuals to rival production houses of 50 years ago

Americans take for granted how much zoning is hurting manufacturing and micromanufacturing. In London a jewler could open up a small retail and crafting shop. In many American cities, it is illegal to open up shops for this purpose or with a footprint small enough that would also be economical

So many things have been added to the mix too, t-shirts, crocheted items, prints, paintings, canvas bags and more.

Thank you all who have supported me this far. More to come about future plans!

remember when you could buy things cheap online? i just figured out how aliexpress worked last year. my plans for doing any micromanufacturing with sourced parts are basically toast, hard pivot to creative re-use for little projects.
