"Protocells" have been shown to self-assemble on micrometeorites 🧪

Which is intriguing as organic compounds are sometimes found on meteorites, and micrometeorites would rain down on planets 🌍 throughout the universe

Protocells self-assembling on micrometeorites hint at origins of life
Micrometeorites are thought to shower down on planets throughout the universe, so the discovery that they help protocells form could tell us something about the chances of life elsewhere

space is also less incredibly corrosive but also has micrometeorites

Datacenters famously need vast amounts of coolant, which is not available in orbit. The result is you need insanely large heat radiation systems. The result of THAT is a vast *vast* cross-sectional area, in an environment with fast ions and micrometeorites.

Did you know? Buzz Aldrin's footprint on the Moon will last ~10 million years before it is erased by rain of micrometeorites.

Les micrométéorites & débris orbitaux se déplacent à plusieurs km/s et constituent une menace pour les engins spatiaux.

Right? “We’re worried about micrometeorites so I hit it really hard with a hammer!”

It's not just human-made stuff, though. The Moon is struck by meteorites, micrometeorites, interplanetary dust and high energy particles, like cosmic rays, all the time. They pulverise, charge, and turn the Moon's surface over in a process called impact gardening. 🧪 🔭

No astronomy per se in this week's issue of @science.org, but there is a fascinating study by Pavia et al. that uses cosmic dust to trace sea ice coverage in the Arctic. 3He from micrometeorites records when the ocean was ice free, over the last 30,000 years. 🧪🌊

Scientists just found ancient air trapped in space dust.
Tiny micrometeorites melt as they fall through our atmosphere, grab oxygen from the air, cool, and lock that signature inside.

This could give us real samples of ancient air.

Wild.

One of our KICP Postdoctoral Fellows noticed that the composition of Avi Loeb's supposed extraterrestrial micrometeorites have a near-perfect composition match to the composition of coal ash, i.e. anthropogenic contamination.

Expected radiation damage has *not* been found on Uranus’ moons, but a couple of them do appear to be surprisingly dusty because of micrometeorites 🧪🔭 www.space.com/astronomy/ur...

How does the Moon's atmosphere get its particles? ☄️ Space debris and micrometeorites constantly pummel the lunar surface, kicking up atoms and dust into the near-emptiness. This continuous shuffling of rock is called "impact gardening." 🪨

The thought that stuff is raining down on Earth from space, ALL THE TIME is kinda crazy.

You can find micrometeorites in your roof gutters if you look. Honest. Go look with a magnet.

But this one is stunning. And on video.

Most of the moon suffers constant bombardment from micrometeorites. You're not going to have giant fields of solar panels. Not that a reactor is that much more viable at this time. All of this is silly.

A cool study! The kind of work *someone* should have fine *before* a big press release claiming to have found interstellar micrometeorites 😊😉🔭🧪

This week’s #MicrometeoriteMonday: A polished scoriaceous micrometeorite from the Sør Rondane Mountains, Antarctica! Unlike fully melted cosmic spherules, scoriaceous micrometeorites are only partially melted and tend to contain abundant vesicles formed by devolatilization. ☄️

Also...there's no way to protect them. Absolutely none. From radiation, micrometeorites, nothing.
