Happy #MicroscopeMonday 🔬ft a gastric neuroendocrine tumor in a bearded dragon! Bearded dragons have a high prevalence of this tumor that originates primarily in the pyloric mucosa, are highly aggressive with consistent hepatic metastasis and intravascular tumor emboli.

Happy #MicroscopeMonday 🔬 fr an American black bear 🧠 with GM1-gangliosidosis! GM1 is a sphingolipidoses lysosomal storage disease with a beta-galactosidase deficiency. It has an autosomal recessive inheritance pattern with a defective GLB1 gene.

Happy #microscopemonday with Trichomonas gallinae immunohistochemistry in a house finch esophagus! T. gallinae is a flagellate protozoal parastite that infects respiratory and GI tract of pigeons, finches, and raptors! It is called canker or croup in pigeons and frounce in raptors.

We are back with #MicroscopeMonday🔬 with a Ziehl-Neelsen Acid fast stain highlighting Mycobacterium avium complex in a wild mallard 🦆! M. Avium can be a major issue in waterfowl in human care. M. avium ssp. paratuberculosis causes Johne’s disease in cattle!

It's #MicroscopeMonday - and this week, we're looking at gametes.

Our science and vet teams evaluate the concentration, health and movement of sperm - just like in a fertility clinic for humans.

Like our endocrinology testing, this is all to support our conservation breeding work.

Happy #MicroscopeMonday 🔬ft a bacterial embolus in the glomerulus of an American badger 🦡 . This badger had a head wound that allowed bacteria to invade opportunistically causing bacterial septicemia allowing for bacterial emboli to arrive in multiple organs. Bacteria are cocci like Staph or Strep!

Hi all, been a minute! But we are back with #MicroscopeMonday 🔬 ft a perivascular cuff in the brain 🧠 of a 🦦!! Perivascular cuffs are a form of encephalitis (brain encephalitis) that can be indicative of viral infections! It is unclear in this case what caused this little cuff in this 🦦!

Happy #MicroscopeMonday with a Sarcocyst in the skeletal muscle of a sea otter 🦦🦦! Sarocysts as previously posted is relatively common incidental finding in many wildlife species and if found in the brain of sea otters can cause neurological disease and death or complications from inability to hunt!

Happy #MicroscopeMonday with a 🐰 liver infected with Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease! RHDV has two virus types of which RHDV2 has spread worldwide through the exchange of pet trade and improperly disinfected equipment. In the name, it causes massive bleeding and tissue death in the 🫁 and liver.

Delayed #MicroscopeMonday ft 🐸 👅!! Frog tongues have abundant mucous glands that help create that sticky feature for them to acquire their prey! However some species of frogs don’t have tongues at all which includes Xenopus laevis, the African clawed frogs, and other members of the Pipidae family!
April 14, 2026 at 1:57 PM
Happy #MicroscopeMonday ft a cestode! This cestode was found in the small intestine of a bobcat! There are several species of cestodes aka tapeworms that can infect a wide variety of species and some cestode species like Echinococcus sp can have severe zoonotic disease impacts on humans!

Happy #MicroscopeMonday ft Avian Influenza (AI) immunohistochemistry on a bobcat brain 🧠! The darkest brown staining is within neurons highlighting the AI infection in this animal! Mammals like cats and seals with Highly pathogenic AI will have encephalitis and neuronal necrosis causing death.
March 23, 2026 at 1:29 PM
Happy #MicroscopeMonday with 🧠 and 🫁 from a bobcat! This bobcat was diagnosed with highly pathogenic avian influenza: 🧠 has lymphohistiocytic encephalitis with neuronal necrosis and 🫁 has interstitial pneumonia with alveolar edema and a thrombus in that vessel in the middle. Classic HPAI in a Felid!

Happy #MicroscopeMonday ft a bat wing with Pseudogymnoascus destructans aka the fungal agent that causes White Nose Syndrome. This fungal agent has wiped out large colonies of bats within North America in the last twenty years. It was introduced from Europe by spelunkers in the early 2000s. 🦇🦇🦇🦇

Happy #MicroscopeMonday ft trematodes and their eggs in big brown bat intestine! 🦇🦇🦇

Parasites are not uncommon in Wildife and it is important to discern if it is a problem or not. In this case, there does not appear to have been weight loss nor damage to the intestine so they are incidental.
March 2, 2026 at 4:48 PM
Happy #MicroscopeMonday featuring normal histology of a big brown bat wing! 🦇

In bats affected with white nose syndrome, we would look for the fungal causative agent, Pseudogymnoascus destructans, in the wing membranes and grade the level of damage affecting them! Big brown bats can be resistant!

#MicroscopeMonday Cross-section of a Kalanchoe marnieriana leaf, with what appears to be emerging but dormant foliar embryo (a dome) near the top.

Kalanchoe marnieriana is a facultative cloning plant, which normally does not produce plantlets but do produce plantlets when leaves are detached.

Happy #MicroscopeMonday 🔬with ranavirus in a barred tiger salamander spleen! There is necrosis with characteristic eosinophilic inclusion bodies! This disease is caused by multiple different viruses 🦠; this one is likely Ambylostoma Tigris virus causing mass mortalities in N. American salamanders!

Happy #MicroscopeMonday 🔬with renal coccidiosis in a juvenile snow goose 🪿! Most likely an Eimeria species, this parasite has a complicated life cycle to the kidneys. Typically, this is asymptomatic but heavy parasitism can cause death is due to renal failure.

Happy #MicroscopeMonday! See the little parasite in this 🦦 🧠? It’s tiny; likely a Sacrocystis neurona or Toxoplasma gondii! Can be difficult to distinguish histologically without molecular or staining techniques! Both can cause severe fatal meningoencephalitis in southern sea otters! 🦦 🔬

Happy #MicroscopeMonday! This is a sarcocyst in a bald eagle heart 🦅🫀

Sarcocystis sp. are relatively common in wildlife species with variability on mortality. Can be deadly if the animal is immunosuppressed and migrates to the brain 🧠 causing severe inflammation and necrosis.

Getting the hang of #MicroscopeMonday 🔬

Meet Polly - a ~2-month-old Holothuria poli juvenile with transparent tissues and floral-patterned ossicles.

I work on H. tubulosa, but this tiny H. poli turned up in a lab mate's samples and is now our lab mascot - at least until a tubulosa appears 👀
