🧪I'm delighted to present a new open-access paper from our team, describing the contents of a fish coprolite assemblage from the beginning of the Late Devonian, about 382-380 million years old, in northern Russia. Data collected in happier days before the war.

And it goes all the way to the brain. Using synchrotron microtomography we found the antennal lobes, the primary olfactory centers, are significantly smaller in non-blood-feeding females: peripheral receptor loss mirrored by shrinkage of the circuits that process their input

Hi, I'm Russell and I'm new here. I do science - terrestrial invertebrates and their fossil record, computer modelling of evolution, arthropod phylogenetics, and microtomography kind of stuff.

As @donalddavesne.bsky.social has joined us here, this might be a good opportunity to flag a really interesting project we collaborated on a few years ago. Using synchrotron microtomography to measure the size of bone cell cavities (which correlate with genome size) in fossil fish bones, /1 🧪

Microtomography shows the wing is made of two thin plates supported by pillars, inflating like an air mattress. Unlike man-made structures the wing surface stretches as it unfolds

I’m right with you - and I work in high-tech research, studying fossils by means of synchrotron microtomography. Some forms of machine-learning are genuinely useful and morally unproblematic, but generative AI is an abomination in the true sense of that word.

Self-healing materials fascinate me; it's such a sci-fi concept, yet almost in mass use. Self-healing concrete for construction would be amazing, but we aren't there yet. But it's in the works, with some really cool ideas. 🧪

Each piece of amber will be scanned in full at a resolution fine enough to spot features a few micrometres across (a micrometre is one-thousandth of a millimetre — about one-hundredth the width of a human hair). 20 chosen specimens will then be magnified further still for an even sharper look.
