In‐vitro puncture experiment using alligator teeth tracks the formation of dental microwear and its association with hardness of the diet
With the development of dental microwear texture analysis (DMTA), there has been an increasing application of DMTA for dietary estimation in extant and fossil reptiles, including dinosaurs. While num...

happy #fossilfriday! bonus: this is pakicetus, an early cetacean from eocene south asia. as the basal-most cetacean currently known, pakicetus was ambulatory on land, though its bone density, dental microwear, and position of the eyes could indicate semiaquatic habits

Much can be said about what a species ate based on the form of their teeth.

Using a tooth microwear approach, researchers in Science find that a narrow diet was not responsible for the extinction of short-faced kangaroos.

so, an hour later, there's a new study that uses dental microwear analysis to confirm a partly osteophaguous diet for the mesonychid dissacus, explicitly comparing it to hyenas www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...
both the cranial and postcranial anatomy of these massive mesonychids shows remarkable convergence with hyenas, arguably the most famous scavengers in the animal kingdom; however, not even hyenas are pure scavengers, and are in fact very successful hunters when need be
