Adult monarch butterflies (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae: Danaus plexippus) often take nectar from common milkweeds (Apocynaceae: Asclepias syriaca), but can feed on a variety of flowers. Their larvae, in contrast, require milkweeds to develop properly. Side Cut Metropark near Maumee Ohio, 27 May 2012.

Adult monarch butterflies (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae: Danaus plexippus) will feed on nectar from many different flowers but their larvae specifically need to eat milkweeds (Apocynaceae: Asclepiadoideae) in order to develop properly. Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, Michigan, 13 Jul 2026.

Fluffy clouds float
carrying the first sign of warmth,
switchgrasses sway
jackrabbits find sanctuary
in this tranquil habitat,
rosy milkweeds attract
the prettiest butterflies,
pleasing stillness lingers
in the heartland of prairies

Got almost all the milkweeds planted and Mother Nature helped me out with a nice soaking rain. One pot left on the deck that I’m waiting to harvest the seeds from and then I’ll plant that one, too. Time to hit the showers.

I lost many butterfly milkweeds in my backyard over the winter, but this one growing out of the front steps is doing great. 🤷

If you plant nonnative milkweeds I'm stealing something from your house!
Why monarch migration numbers are decreasing...(page 10)
"The first is the increasing prevalence of a debilitating monarch parasite, Ophryocystis elektrosirrha,...This increase corresponds with increased plantings of nonnative milkweeds throughout the flyway. "

Today’s milkweeds are cuddling on a frosty morning. ❄️

Maybe they’re dreaming of becoming dolphins, swimming in a warm ocean. ☀️
