She was not here for romance. She was here to get away from all those messy, human passions. Romance had found her too willing in the Tower, and all it had done for her was ruin her life and nearly led to her death. Even if she was growing comfortable in Mistria, with the townsfolk who made her smile or laugh or offered her help, she had to keep her priorities straight. There was no way she would fall in love. At most, she would grow old and perhaps remain in Mistria as she did so, carrying on Elsie’s or Terithia’s position in the town as the people changed over the years. Given all that she was running from, that was the best she could hope for — no matter how sweetly her dragon companion looked at her.

She placed her hand over his and squeezed for a moment before letting go, and he stared at the hand she'd held for a moment. The quickness had left little warmth behind, but it was still like he had been branded. "I have full faith in your abilities," he said, swallowing the lump in his throat. It had never been so distracting to be in her presence until now. He swung his legs gently over the side of the bed and stood, taking her proffered arm. Once again, he felt the warmth of her skin slink past the barrier of his, and he was never more glad to no longer be a statue. Had all of her touches from before been this sweet, this warm? Would they all have left jolts of lightning prickling all along where they pressed against each other? Caldarus would have to teach her a new spell later to see if the sensation was the same. He wondered what sort of face she'd make if he asked her to cast it on him.

Caldarus frowned. "It is my hope that I can one day walk the same paths you do, Daphne. If you would have me." "Emerson will be glad to have a new person to terrorize," she teased, reaching down to open the basket. "I brought some tea and bread from the Inn. I thought some more simple foods may be worth starting with." He nodded. "It is the first time in many years that my body requires sustenance. Though," he said, smiling lightly. "I should like to partake in some of the more complex meals I've seen you eat in the past year." Daphne laughed, and he found this form loved the sound even more than before. "Let's get you up and moving first before we think of that, Caldarus."
