The Steve Reich weekend started with Clapping Music from 1972 and finished with this from a couple of years later and despite being roughly the same era, they bookended it perfectly. Mallets might be his best piece, a perfect blend of maths and melody

Nixon in China is/was one of the greatest works of art of the 20th century. If you haven’t seen it at the Opera House, block out three hours to the premiere, which is conveniently on youtube, ASAP.

Because appropriate today, here is the moment in Nixon in China when Air Force One lands, with Nixon greeted by Zhou Enlai.

This is, imo, the greatest opera of the modern era.

(The librettist @revdalicegoodman.bsky.social is on bluesky).

There are many admirable things about Peter Gena, but personally I'll first of all always be grateful to him for proving that somebody besides me likes Beethoven's 22nd sonata (The One Between Waldstein And Appassionata)
