Documentarian Laura Poitras & Rachel Lauren Mueller likens ICE's Operation Metro Surge in Minnesota to a horror film in her short film They're Here. Read Lida Bach's Venice International Film Festival review of They're Here below:
They’re Here (short film) ★★★★
“The reality is a nightmare,” Laura Poitras said in an interview about her spectral short film, premiering out of competition at the 81st Venice Film Festival. The Oscar-winning director and producer does this bitter fact justice by shrouding the grim reality of the kidnapping and abduction of migrant residents in the US by ICE in the style of genre cinema. The documentary itself is only 25 minutes, but that is enough for the unsettling account of the ICE enforcement surge in the wintry Minneapolis of 2024. This year the deportation rate of migrant citizens increased over 70 per cent, fuelled by the brutal tactics of the Trump administration.

Minneapolis drone first responder program faces community pushback
Minneapolis leaders are weighing whether to launch a new “drones as first responders” pilot program that would send police drones to certain 911 calls on the north side. The proposal drew hours of testimony Wednesday as the Public Health, Safety and Equity Committee heard from city staff, police officials and dozens of concerned residents. The Minneapolis Police Department is asking the City Council to approve a 75-day trial with California-based Skydio Inc. The drones would launch from Minneapolis Fire Station 14 in the Fourth Precinct and stream live video back to Minneapolis 911 and responding officers. In a presentation to council members, the city described the program as “the proactive use of drones to immediately respond to a 911 call for service.” The slides said drones would provide “real-time situational awareness” so first responders “watch what is happening before they get there,” allowing for a more informed response or clearing some calls without sending a squad. Andy Skoogman, chief of staff for the Office of Community Safety, told council members the concept is meant to improve safety and efficiency. “Drones are not a replacement for police officers, for firefighters, for EMS personnel,” Skoogman said. “They are simply a tool that...
