Mirasaura grauvogeli, one of the fantastic Triassic oddballs known as drepanosaurs.

To brighten up a wet and rainy #FossilFriday, here's my take on the recently described drepanosaur Mirasaura grauvogeli. It's shown among the conifer Voltzia, a plant found in abundance in the same beds as Mirasaura. The pointed sail shape is based on fossil data...

The “plumes” of Mirasaura and Longisquama likely evolved separately from the feathers or feather-like structures we know in Dinosaurs and pterosaurs. Like other Drepanosauromorphs, Mirasaura also had a weird, bird-like and mostly toothless skull

Here it is! Please welcome the AMAZING Mirasaura grauvogeli, a NEW MARVELOUS Drepanosaur published in NATURE today!
This astonishing reptile lived during the Middle Triassic in Europe and it possessed an amazing crest made of plume-like structures!

I was commissioned to bring it to life

Could extraordinary plume-like structures like those on Longisquama and the recently described Mirasaura be present in other drepanosauromorphs? I think it is not completely out of the question!

The elaborate crest represents a new perspective in the evolution of feather-like structures in reptiles. Mirasaura was related to another bizarrely-crested reptile, Longisquama, and both appear to belong to an already very weird group: Drepanosauromorphs

This new discovery is WEIRD. Mirasaura (the 'marvellous lizard') has been described from the Triassic of France, and it has mad projections coming out of its back, far longer than its body. We take a ...

@stephanspiekman.bsky.social and colleagues recently described Mirasaura grauvogeli, a newly discovered Triassic reptile, which has a complex feathered skin crest that evolved independently of feathers or hair! 🧪

The Triassic was a time of weird reptiles of every description.

This is one of the more recent finds: Mirasaura from France. It's one of the drepanosaurs, an odd group of arboreal reptiles with superficially bird-like heads and, in some cases, equally superficially feather-like appendages.

Proud to make my National Geographic debut with this incredible discovery! Meet Mirasaura, an extremely weird little guy with independently-evolved "feathers" that solves a longstanding Triassic mystery and makes one of the period's oddest families even stranger.

(Now with a fixed link!)
Is it a bird? A monkey? No, it's a 'miraculous' new prehistoric reptile
Mirasaura grauvogeli had a featherlike crest and a tail like a monkey. “It's been a long time since I've been so blown away by a new fossil discovery.”

I can honestly say Mirasaura is probably the most interesting taxon I have ever reconstructed and it represents a UNIQUE find! You can see here the rough sketches that were done in preparation for this illustration. Eventually, it was option "D" the one selected to bring Mirasaura to life!
