absolutely. i think this is where the fantasy of presidentialism ends up wrecking our popular imagination...it keeps getting reduced to like one guy (President Punch, Nixon, etc.) but its really a theory of authoritarian sovereignty floated in part by that misrecognition

Basically Trump's entire being, like many other oligarchs, is a misrecognition of where he stands in relation to society: he depends on it, he's part of a larger social whole, but he thinks it depends on him
sam’s thread helps clarify something for me, which is the underlying theory behind trump’s action. trump does not see himself as a president in a system of shared authority, he sees himself as sovereign, with unchecked authority over everything.
I see some suggestions, in the reporting regarding the OMB impoundment order, that a mere delay in spending appropriated funds is legal. But that's not really true. The delay OMB has ordered specifically contradicts the Impoundment Control Act. A thread.

It is a cop out to say Americans can't analyze/describe authoritarianism at home because we aren't used to it/it hasn't happened here. If you ask any Black person who survived Jim Crow, this is not unforseeable. We've sanitzed and emptied Civil Rights history to get to this point of misrecognition.

It is a cop out to say Americans can't analyze/describe authoritarianism at home because we aren't used to it/it hasn't happened here. If you ask any Black person who survived Jim Crow, this is not unforseeable. We've sanitzed and emptied Civil Rights history to get to this point of misrecognition.
What I find striking here is the emphasis on misrecognition. The real risk isn’t overreaction, but continuing to treat this as a normal, cyclical crisis rather than a structural break. Surely systems fail when assumptions lag reality?

The paradox is that even though class can be diagnosed as a form of misrecognition, its rectification cannot be accomplished via recognition. To recognize class as a moral injury is to recognize that recognition cannot resolve the misrecognition of class. QED

if this Democratic Party leadership gets swept out in primaries because it refused to mobilize a base that would have been deeply receptive to its messaging and strategy decisions, out of a comic misrecognition of them as angry leftist posters, it will be a beautifully justified ironic punishment
