This poem takes for inspiration Kokinshū 75; there is a similar comparison of scattering blossoms to snowflakes, which the poet calls snowflakes that will not dissolve. This poem uses the same mitate, drawing attention to the warm wind that is not melting the drift of white blossoms he sees.

Rendered in the delicate, elongated style of late 18th-century bijin-ga (pictures of beautiful women), this print is a sophisticated mitate-e (parodic allusion print) that translates classical poetry into a contemporary Edo-period domestic scene. At the top right, an inscription cartouche presents Poem No. 8 from the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu anthology by the legendary 9th-century poet Kisen Hōshi: "Waga io wa miyako no tatsumi shika zo sumu / Uji to hito wa iu nari" ("My hut lies southeast of the capital, where I live in quiet seclusion, though people call it a place of gloom"). In Edo urban culture, artists frequently engaged in playful visual wordplay; because Kisen Hōshi resided in Uji—the heartland of Japan's prized green tea production—his poem routinely inspired tea-themed parodies that played on the homophonous association between Uji tea and spiritual retreat. Here, the artist reincarnates the hermit-poet's literary solitude into an intimate, playful exchange between two stylish women. The figure on the right directly embodies the Uji tea motif, carrying a polished brass kettle (dobin) in her right hand while balancing a red-lacquered wooden tray set with porcelain tea cups and saucers in her left. She leans forward toward her companion, who stands poised beside a folding screen (byōbu), intently examining a folded letter or poem slip (tanzaku). Sartorially, the print provides a exquisite study in turn-of-the-19th-century female dress history. The woman on the left wears a long, muted taupe-grey kosode lined in vivid vermilion silk (momi), tied high at the waist with a wide, rust-red obi. Her companion wears an ensemble featuring a slate-blue skirt patterned along the lower hem with delicate, resist-dyed white vine scrollwork (karakusa), layered beneath a pale yellow upper garment and a dark outer drape.

Pioneered by Suzuki Harunobu (c. 1725–1770) during the mid-1760s, Japan, multi-block color printing (nishiki-e) revolutionized Edo's graphic arts, allowing printmakers to achieve delicate, opaque pastel tones and rich tonal shading.
In a sublime display of mid-18th-century nishiki-e (brocade printmaking), a slender beauty (bijin) strides gracefully against a swirling, marbled backdrop, performing a playful mitate (poetic parody) of an itinerant monkey trainer (saru-mawashi). She wears a layered gown in soft salmon-pink and deep chestnut silk embellished with scattered cherry blossoms (sakura), her head loosely draped in a checked cotton scarf (tenugui). Elevated on a slender stick, she cradles a small shoulder drum (tsuzumi) while holding the tether to a performing monkey. The capering primate is humorously outfitted in a miniature festival jacket and tall eboshi cap stamped with a rising sun, proudly brandishing a tiny toy sword and a folding fan emblazoned with a red sun disk (hinomaru).

Courtesan at a Writing Desk by Isoda Koryūsai This elegant silk scroll painting from the late Edo period (1772–1789) is a "mitate-e" or parody, cleverly casting a beautiful courtesan in the role of the Chinese warrior-hero Guan Yu. The central figure is shown seated at a low, red lacquer writing desk, her long, ink-black hair flowing over her shoulder as she examines a calligraphic scroll. She wears an exquisite layered kimono; the outer robe is a deep indigo decorated with white net patterns and golden floral motifs, while the inner layers reveal a striking crimson border. Standing behind her, an attendant in a striped brown and gold robe adjusts a garment hanging on a rack, while a small vase of cherry blossoms rests on the desk, adding a touch of seasonal "New Beauty" to the scholarly scene.
