Mixtec wood turquoise mosaic mask, deity associated with Dzahui or aspects of Venus and solar/warrior deities, depending on the codex's context, 1400–1521CE. This is an example of exquisite Mixtec art from before the conquest of the region, but unfortunately its whereabouts after 1945 are unknown.

This photo shows a famous pre-Columbian artifact known as the Mixtec Gold Pectoral of Mictlantecuhtli. It is an incredibly detailed chest ornament (pectoral) crafted from pure gold. It dates back to the Late Postclassic period (c. 1300–1450 CE) and was discovered in 1932 by archaeologist Alfonso Caso inside Tomb 7 at Monte Albán, located in Oaxaca, Mexico.

Hanging from the lower lip, this Mixtec lip plug (bezote) features a carved green jade pheasant head set into a brilliant gold base. Reserved for elite rulers and high-ranking lords, it represents late Postclassic artistry from Monte Albán, Oaxaca, 1250-1521 CE.

The Mixtec (300-800CE) and Zapotec (1000CE) are two distinct yet closely related Indigenous civilizations, overlapping each other. This artifact is both, depending on whether you mean who built the tomb or who made and left the treasure. It’s Mixtec craftmanship, found in a tomb at Monte Alban.

Ceramic vessel in the shape of an eagle, originating from the Nahua or Mixtec culture of Mexico (Puebla, Tlaxcala, or Oaxaca), Late Postclassic Period, dated between 1250 and 1521, made of ceramic with pigment. Collection: Yale University Art Gallery.⁣ In Mesoamerican cultures, the eagle (cuauhtli) was a deeply sacred creature holding immense spiritual, political, and military significance.The presence of the eagle in this specific ceramic vessel highlights several core elements of Postclassic Mesoamerican cosmology. In Nahua mythology, the eagle was the ultimate symbol of the sun. The bird’s ability to fly high into the sky and gaze directly downward associated it with sunbeams, celestial light, and daytime. The striped plumages and red-ochre geometric motifs painted onto this vessel are stylized representations of these radiating sunbeams. The eagle was the patron animal of the Eagle Warriors (cuāuhtli), one of the two most prestigious elite military classes in the empire (alongside the Jaguar Warriors). Warriors who achieved this rank wore elaborate helmets and garments resembling eagles to channel the bird's precision, strength, and predatory prowess in battle. Vessels decorated with elite codex-style imagery were often used by these upper-class warriors and nobles during ceremonial banquets. Zoomorphic effigy vessels from this tradition were frequently used to hold ritual offerings, such as pulque (a sacred alcoholic beverage) or ceremonial liquids. Because eagles were responsible for "feeding the sun" to give it energy for its daily journey across the sky, vessels fashioned in their image reinforced the vital bond between human ritual and cosmic survival.

In Ñuu Savi (Mixtec) and surrounding Mesoamerican cultures like the Zapotec, bat heads symbolize night, death, sacrifice, and the underworld. They are associated with caves—seen as portals to the spirit realm—and act as guardians, representing a connection to ancestors, agricultural protection by eating pests, and transformation. The Mixtec people are one of the oldest and most culturally rich Indigenous groups in southern Mexico. They call themselves Ñuu Savi, meaning People of the Rain in their language, reflecting their spiritual bond with nature and the weather that sustains their crops. Their homeland, known as the Mixteca region, stretches across the highlands of Oaxaca, Puebla, and Guerrero, with misty mountains, fertile valleys, and sacred mountain peaks that shape their identity. The Mixtec are remarkable artisans and storytellers. They create intricate gold jewelry, turquoise mosaics, and beautifully illustrated codices that record their myths and dynasties. Their ancient deerskin manuscripts preserve one of the most complete Indigenous histories in the Americas. Their artistry and craftsmanship were so advanced that Mixtec goldsmiths were highly sought after by other Mesoamerican kingdoms. Even after the Spanish conquest, the Mixtec held on to much of their identity. Their villages remain centers of weaving, pottery, and farming, and their language is still spoken by hundreds of thousands today. The Mixtec story, like the Zapotecs, is one of endurance. They’ve carried their traditions through centuries of change, keeping their rain-soaked mountains and ancestral ways alive in modern Mexico.
