unlike other games that use the gold/silver/bronze motif, the mario kart ds placement icons gradually become more red as your rank worsens, even in the podium spots. this taught me at a young age that anything short of perfection carries the stain of failure

it’s kinda cool how MKDS feels designed not just for the DS’s features (bottom screen map) but also for its restrictions
tracks needing to be low poly means they don’t really get to be bumpy. and guess what? MKDS controls best on flat surfaces
