Wildfires continue to burn across northwestern Ontario, prompting another evacuation order for areas near Lac des Mille Lacs. Residents of Baril, Windigoostigwan lakes, and surrounding regions have been instructed to leave immediately unless they possess a travel permit from the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNRF). The Fort Frances 14 fire, now over 55,000 hectares in size, remains uncontrolled as of Thursday evening. Provincial authorities reported 129 active fires in the region, with evacuation orders affecting multiple communities including Armstrong, Whitesand First Nation, and Lac des Mille Lacs First Nation. Highway closures have been implemented on key routes like Highway 527 and 599 due to wildfire activity. Air quality alerts are in effect for numerous locations, with Environment Canada forecasting potential improvements by Friday if wind patterns shift. However, smoke may return if winds reverse. Fire bans and restricted burning zones have been enforced across several municipalities, including Thunder Bay and Kenora. Services such as outdoor pools, golf courses, and public washrooms have been closed to mitigate health risks. The Thunder Bay Border Cats postponed a baseball game due to poor air quality, and the Festival of India was rescheduled to August 15. Authorities emphasize ongoing monitoring of fire behavior and air quality while urging residents to follow evacuation orders and stay informed through official channels.
