“The King of Duntrine had a daughter when he was old, and she was the fairest King’s daughter between two seas…”

—Robert Louis Stevenson’s “The Song of the Morrow” is the last of his twenty published FABLES. An eerie, looping tale, it could be described as a fictional Möbius strip

An illustration for “The Song of the Morrow”, by E.R. Herman. Published the 1914 Longman’s edition of Robert Louis Stevenson’s FABLES. Three female figures stand by a seashore, their dresses, hair, and shawls billowing in the wind. A young woman in white looks down at a crone in black, who crouches among a tangle of seaweed and dead leaves. A mature woman huddles behind the young woman, clutching her hands to her breast. In the top left corner of the image, seagulls wheel above an unruly sea.
