#monopsony
(also the relevant concept is monopsony power 😤)

When was the last time a politician used the word “monopsony”? #econsky
MUST-WATCH: "Until they drive prices UP... Americans aren't complaining right now that prices are too LOW."

Regulate data brokers like we regulate airline pilots. Real data privacy laws. Break up the online advertising monopsony, which has been used to gut the funding needed for journalism outlets to be genuinely independent.
Now that Bluesky is the official social media app representing the popular will of the United States of America™️, what is our first cultural decree?

Just dunking on him with the monopsony at end

We knew that monopsony power in labor markets is one way of keeping workers' wages down. Turns out, it's also stifling innovation.

Like single payer healthcare is a great idea but the details rarely survived past “okay where are you gonna find the 5-10% of GDP in new taxes this will take” let alone “how much will we press the monopsony button”

Wages for the vast majority of workers have stagnated since the 1980s while productivity has grown....
Both (monopoly and monopsony) contribute to the decoupling ...with monopoly being the primary determinant: in 2016 monopoly accounts for 75% of wage stagnation,
monopsony for 25%.

Excellent - thanks for sharing. He’s brilliant. I had not heard of monopsony so have been doing some reading. Think it’s been way too long since my last economics class.

The same people I was panicking with my reporting included players who wanted to buy distressed freight companies and port operators so they could extract monopsony rents on vital global infrastructure. Oh, and break longshoremans and freight unions to increase profitability.

Then those same farmers are screwed again by the grocery giants. Instead of selling their crops to a highest bidder, they're forced to take whatever lousy deal is offered by the only bidder, a monopsony with a stranglehold on purchasing their farm outputs. 11/

it's an interesting econ case study of monopoly power in product market enabling monopsony power in the input market.

although given returns to scale in reporting, the solution is probably like point a money cannon at journalism and not break up the NYTimes.

A few days ago I saw an excellent post here describing the NYT as acquiring significant monopsony power in the current media landscape. It is one of the few remaining high prestige news outlets, and can basically fire and hire at will given the lack of outside options.
BREAKING: The New York Times has terminated their contract with romance columnist Olivia Waite after she reposted @markjacob.bsky.social 's repost of @marisakabas.bsky.social criticism of the Times’ coverage of new rape allegations about Trump.

That is a sentence I didn’t think I’d type today.

The opposite of a monopoly is a monopsony where the market is dictated by one client.
Our oil resources were subject to a monopsony by the Conservative negotiated free trade agreement. This required us to sell our oil to the USA, no take backs, decreasing the value of our oil.
Who fixed this.

For what it's worth, OpenAI can only buy so much RAM because there was a robust market with millions of microcomputer buyers to fuel Moore's law the past ~40 years.

A single buyer (market monopsony state) would destroy the market forces he depends on.

Him dumb in the head.

The problem with monopoly in business.
Once they buy up all their competition, consumers have no choice. Neither do workers.

Why do some firms seem to pay workers less than what their labor is worth? An economic model gives insights into how wage-setting power arises in modern labor markets.

Monopsony.

The yin to monopoly’s yang!?! (My translation.)

Single buyer has the power to negotiate prices. Elegant discussion.

You're also going to find it well nigh impossible to force millions of providers to be beholden to a government monopsony. Many will elect concierge service.

@austinfrerick.bsky.social and @basel.bsky.social have written extensively on how these monopolies gouge both consumers and producers, both the general public and labor, by wielding monopoly and monopsony power.

We have to learn to tell the complexity of these stories in simple ways.

Economen hebben het in dit verband over 'monopsony power' van werk/opdrachtgevers. Dat komt erop neer dat ze tegen potentiele werk- en opdrachtnemers kunnen zeggen: 'Voor jou 10 anderen'

One aspect of markets is that they pretty consistently collapse into monopoly or monopsony unless they are actively managed with rigorous antitrust enforcement.

And that's just one of the failure mechanisms!

Still beats the alternatives though.

spirit and jet blue should have merged. The logic that amazon uses monopsony power over third party sellers is not at all like trump on trade. It lowers prices - only for customers willing to shop on amazon. it is very bad for competition. She also didn't stop it happening.

Sweeping compulsory purchase powers, coerced consolidation of the construction industry including monopsony labour market power, very deliberate top-down land assembly.

If you're going to do it you have to go all in and do it properly!

All because the Conservatives agreed to this.
Canada had to maintain a fixed proportion of its total energy exports (oil and natural gas) to the United States, based on recent export levels.
This established a monopsony lowering our oil price and making export pipelines unviable.

CUSMA ended it.
