(I believe that’s not the case in Asheville proper but in Black Mountain, Montreat, and Swannanoa, nothing.)

Officially, I've been claiming it's a "vintage raincoat", but we all know what it really is.

I think a few folks on here might know me from my Montreat days: My lovely grandmother, Dorothy Thielman, died yesterday after a long illness. If you’re local and want to come to the memorial, DM me. I will miss her a lot. She was everything a little boy could ever want from a human being.

Spent a couple of beautiful days with the folks at Montreat College and had a surprise reunion with a student of mine from 20+ (!!!) years ago who brought his lovely daughter to meet me. What an honor and blessing.

First time back at Montreat since the hurricane devastation. Snow coming down over a dredged Lake Susan is quite the juxtaposition. #northcarolina

for context (my sister almost went to Montreat) regarding $20m in state funds going to a religious private college - Montreat faculty are required to sign a pledge opposing same sex marriage & abortion, and unmarried students must abstain from all "interpersonal sexual activity."

I grew up spending time in Montreat, NC, and my heart is absolutely with western NC in the hurricane aftermath.

In 2019, legislators agreed to give Montreat $20 million for the regional facility known as the Carolina Cyber Center. The eight-figure sum to a private, Christian college was unprecedented.

Update: I grew up going to Montreat, NC, every summer. It's a Presbyterian enclave, and I worked there in college.

I have family there now, and it's been hit hard. Folks are completely stranded. Roads are wrecked. Folks are banding together, but it's unclear when help can arrive.

I'm very worried.
I'm only able to communicate with my family member intermittently, when someone nearby has a working phone.

Groups are huddling together in power-less houses to take care of each other, because they can't go anywhere.

I cannot stress this enough: it's bad.
My friends and family members are currently among those stranded out in western NC (although they are safe), currently without power or running water. I was just there a week ago.

Absolutely tragic across the board here.
