ESA's Hera spacecraft has taken its first image separating the asteroid Didymos from its small moon Dimorphos, four years after NASA's DART mission deliberately struck the moonlet to test planetary defense.

4 years ago, NASA's DART spacecraft crashed into asteroid Dimorphos to test tech for deflecting a potentially hazardous space object. Now ESA's Hera mission is about to give us our first clear look at the aftermath.

This is the larger companion asteroid, Didymos. 🔭🧪

I should probably design a more custom version of the moonlet bc I do hate drawing that thing I can’t lie, it’s so big and heavy looking I know it hurts arv’s poor ear

More chaotic than that - the ejecta did not settle down into a very thin disc or ring.

But there are a set of predictions that most of the material accreted onto Didymos should still have come in along the equator.

For example: arxiv.org/abs/2607.26342
Dynamical evolution and surface accretion of DART impact ejecta in the (65803) Didymos system
The DART spacecraft impacted Dimorphos, the small moonlet of Didymos binary system, on 26 September 2022. The impact ejected dust, fragments, and boulders into the near-binary environment. In November...

Flybys nudge moonlets onto crossing paths. Twice, they smash. 🎱

Real moons can be luckier: Saturn's Janus and Epimetheus share almost the same orbit and swap places about every four years instead of colliding.

Didymos and Dimorphos seen by DART

For the first time, ESA's Hera spacecraft can see the asteroid Didymos and its small moon Dimorphos as two separate objects. Its camera took the image on 18 October from 1,280 km away. On board is a gyroscope built by InnaLabs in Blanchardstown, Dublin.

So exciting! DART shortened Dimorphos's orbit around Didymos by about 32 minutes, proof a spacecraft can nudge an asteroid. Can't wait to see the aftermath up close on 25 November. Is the team expecting a crater, or a totally reshaped moonlet?

moonlet and krislet what will they do

the moonlet is going to give it a big bald spot… get that thing to STOP

Hey, remember that asteroid we punched? And by “that asteroid” I mean Dimorphos, the cute little moonlet to Didymos, and by “we” I mean NASA's 2022 DART mission. You know, the one where we sent a spacecraft to slam into an unsuspecting asteroid just minding its own business out there in the cosmos? Right, that one. It turns out the story isn’t quite over!

TIL earth has a second, tiny moon that's been orbiting us for a hundred years and science just now noticed it. I feel you, little moonlet

G'estalt was gifted his ever-iconic Moonlet earring from his mother before departing home to become an adventurer.

"May the light of the moon guide you through the darkest nights to your next hunt."

Serves as his good luck charm, he tends to fidget with it when alone or stressed _(:3」∠)_

Chariklo's rings changed between 2017 and 2022, the inner one denser and the outer one fading, and an unseen moonlet may be feeding both.

Crazy to think it's 4 years since DART proved planetary defense. On Sept 26, 2022, we impacted Dimorphos. That 570kg probe hit at 6.1 km/s, shrinking its orbit by 33 minutes. That's 27x more than they needed. Incredible engineering.

4 years ago today: DART hits an asteroid.

DART struck the moonlet Dimorphos to test whether an impact can change an asteroid's orbit; it shortened the orbit by thirty-two minutes. 27 orbital launches have flown on this date.
