Why are there so many moonquakes? Analyses of seismometers left on the moon during the Apollo moon landings reveal a surprising number of moonquakes occurring within 100 kilometers of the surface. In fact, 62 moonquakes were detected in data recorded between 1972 and 1977. Many of these moonquakes

how's mars? any marsquakes?

Shake, rattle and roll – on the Moon🌘
Earthquakes aren’t unique to Earth. 'Moonquakes', however, happen for different reasons than here at home. Without plate tectonics, the Moon shakes because of:
🌍Earth’s gravity
🗜the Moon is shrinking!
☄️meteoroid impacts
🌡️temperature changes between day and night

Io is all kinds of excitement, provided you can observe it from a safe distance. Tidal forces from Jupiter's gravitational field are so strong they keep squishing the whole moon, heating its interior and powering endless geological activity-- volcanoes and certainly huge moonquakes

Using Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) observations and samples collected during Apollo 17, scientists are developing new methods to study the intensity and frequency of moonquakes.

The moon has moonquakes. They happen due to tidal stresses connected to the distance between the moon and the Earth.

Learning more about the origins and effects of moonquakes will expand our understanding of the Moon and support future lunar missions, so scientists are looking at options to study them in space and down here on Earth – including at our LUNA Hall in Cologne.

Every satellite is loaded with technology, so it’s only right that our largest satellite gets some new tech on board. A future Artemis mission will install seismometers on the moon to learn more about the internal lunar structure, and monitor how the surface behaves during moonquakes and impacts.

Moonquakes incoming!!
Just a quick 🧪🛰️ note about yesterday’s Chandrayaan-3 landing by ISRO. It officially includes the first seismometer on the Moon since Apollo. It’s a little high-frequency micromachined silicon sensor, which I think has a resonance up near 200 Hz, but it is a seismometer on the Moon!
