This paper is so freakin' cool. The authors use a combination of comparative anatomy, the fossil record, phylogenetic methods, and morphometric analysis to figure out how (and when) seals evolved "amphibious hearing" that uniquely enable them to effectively hear in both air & underwater
Seals have a superpower: they are the only mammals with amphibious hearing! They hear well both in-air and underwater.

My collagues and I have a new study in Proceedings B on the origins and evolution of amphibious hearing in pinnipeds 🦭🔊🧪

Some 🧪 thoughts:

💀 the skull shows some differences to the adult skull shape (especially in the zygomatic region).

Did Homotherium show ontogenetic allometry in its skull?

I can't wait to see geometric morphometric analysis!

And so we had to say goodbye to the kitty, and sit on this delicious secret.

Had we continued to work with Albert & co, we would have made geometric morphometric comparisons with adult Homotherium & Smilodon skulls to supplement species ID, and compared ontogenetic trajectories with living cats.

2/ Dewaele et al. - another morphometric analysis of phocid seal humeri and femora, and again, they seem not to be terribly diagnostic - despite most of phocid fossil taxonomy being based on postcrania. Doesn't look good. anatomypubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/...

To find out, we did a morphometric analysis of extant pinnipeds, their terrestrial relatives which can only hear in-air, and ~20 fossil pinnipeds. What we found was that pinniped's amphibious hearing evolved over 26 million years ago!

How do organelles fit together inside a crowded cell? Answering this question requires a way to image many organelles in a whole cell at high resolution with high throughput. Our new preprint shows how to do this in yeast using soft x-ray tomography
