TEX is the culmination of my PhD research. Not only do we describe & figure our new species in exhaustive detail, but we include a revised phylogenetic dataset for analysis of Mosasauridae, & my measurement dataset for HUNDREDS OF MOSASAURS & EXTANT LIZARDS-& it's ALL OPEN ACCESS

Because I did everything from scratch, & was on a limited timeline, we were not able to fully sample Mosasauridae. But, we were able to include more spp of tylos than had ever been analyzed together before. We found three weird things:

1) Dinosaurs and other prehistoric creatures! 🦖🦕🦈
My personal favorites are Spinosaurus & Styracosaurus for the dinos, and Dunklesteus & pretty much any Mosasauridae for prehistoric aquatic creatures.

You can check out the paper here. Another favorite facet of this fossil? Several shed shark teeth were found with the skeleton, indicating scavenging. Despite being lunch, I think this Mosasaurus looks pretty good.

Finally, to break the Permian streak I have the late Cretaceous aquatic Squamate group; Mosasauridae! This artwork doesn’t give the clade justice in just how diverse the group is.

While Bruce the Tylosaurus proriger is a giant, no doubt, the *true* behemoths among the Mosasauridae were to be found within Mosasaurus maximus/hoffannii, another branch of this evolutionary bush and among the last of the mosasauroids before the K-Pg extinction.
Did you know #mosasaurs can be World Record holders? Well, if you visit the Canadian Fossil Discovery Centre, you’ll meet Bruce, the 13 meter-long, #worldrecord holder for largest mosasaur on display!🥇🏆

(The largest published mosasaur is ~17 meters long 😮)
