Countdown is on for the return of moundbuilder myth-esque "who actually built the mounds/made these belongings" questions to make their return to museum exhibits, since saying they are the cultural heritage of Indigenous people is also no longer allowed.

Both Mormonism and Lewis and Clark’s expedition were motivated by the same pseudo-archaeology. That Native Americans couldn’t have built the earthwork mounds across the US. Brigham Young went with Lost Tribes of Israel, while Jefferson thought it was the Welsh. www.thoughtco.com/moundbuilder...
What Evidence is There that the Moundbuilder Myth is False?
The moundbuilder myth was created by European settlers of the North American continent who did not want to believe somebody else lived there first

Jackson also invoked pseudoarchaeological moundbuilder myths to justify this. He said that Indigenous people did not build mounds, but that mounds had been built by a prior "once powerful race" (guess who). Then it was argued Indigenous people had no claim to the land, but white settlers did.
In 1832 the Supreme Court affirmed that Native American nations were in fact independent and sovereign.

That didn't stop President Andrew Jackson from ignoring the ruling and pursing a policy of native removal anyway. It was "allowed" because no one stopped him.

THE MOUNDBUILDER MYTH

The Moundbuilder Myth refers primarily to 19th century interpretations of the mounds and enclosures of eastern North America as the works of a lost civilization (White People) unrelated to the American Indian cultures.

200 Ancient Mounds Sacred to 20 of today’s First Nations Tribes on gorgeous land overlooking the Upper Mississippi River. Effigy Mounds National Monument isn’t the first Moundbuilder culture that I’ve covered on RaymondsWhere, but I have to say this location effortlessly commanded respect.

The Gerzean Blade started as a writing prompt from my group.
I wrote chapter 1 in 40min.

🌩Then I KNEW I had something solid.⚡️

My love for Cahokia and moundbuilder culture, a poster in my office showing ancient stone tools, a recent watch of Cowboy Bebop, and my anthropology degree all combined.
Tell me about the mysteries you’ve written. What drew you to them? How did you pull it all together in the end? 🔎 #WritingPrompt

period 3500–1500 BCE, shell mounds and “riverine” economies, and then later moving down to Ohio and the first earthwork Moundbuilder Cultures beginning 800 BCE.

The narrative by "archaeologists" about moundbuilder structures was that the natives had to have been too primitive to build them and must have overcome a previous more advanced and Aryan civilization.

So they theorized that a civilization of white people had been living in the area in the past, but had been destroyed by the ancestors of the Native Americans.

Hell, the whole Nationalism movements of the 19th century hinged on Origin Charter narratives that were reeaaaly fake.

Mormonism uses fake racist moundbuilder history as apart of its foundational dogma..

Most fake runestones in NA are utilized to undermine Indigenous People's claim to their homes.

You might be interested in Jason Colavito's recent book about the moundbuilder myths. It's pretty informative and covers a lot of ground!

if people want to fantasise about being a moundbuilder in cahokia or a peasant-citizen in an ancient greek city-state i dont necessarily feel a need to stop them but the southern levant specifically is essentially a zone of permanent ethnic cleansing and cultural genocide for all of recorded history

Me, too. Started as a grade schooler learning about the Moundbuilder natives of the Ohio Valley, then about slavery and the Underground Railroad, then about my Jewish forebears, and it sprung from there.

It's a *horror show*. It's *so racist*. And also he just basically makes up an unoriginal riff on Moundbuilder bs using Hittites as the origin point for both the Olmecs and Koreans. It's insane.

People in the old world do this all the time and it kinda makes me crazy. You know what awesome historical artifacts are randomly buried in backyards in Ohio? Diddly squat, unless it's a Moundbuilder site (which are *extremely* obvious, and therefore known and labeled and protected and all.)

I keep asking but who is writing the future-book about early 19th century pseudo-archaeology including the moundbuilder stuff and mormons / masons?

Hope this is in your project?? Lovely to see you here btw, keep on keepin' on!

Oh no, one of the myths/legends DJ Butler has drawn from prominently in Witchy Eye is the Moundbuilder myth, the oft-debunked belief that Native Americans couldn't have possibly built mounds around the Great Lakes region, so it must've been an advanced race of white people the natives killed off.

In the latest issue of the Journal of Ohio Archaeology, Rob Cook and I review the history of the amazing Serpent Mound, and address how this history has been ignored or distorted by people with varying agendas that are all tied to the racist Moundbuilder Myth.
