The Man Who Would Be King is a classic 1975 epic adventure film directed by John Huston, adapted from Rudyard Kipling’s 1888 novella. The movie stars Sean Connery as Daniel Dravot and Michael Caine as Peachy Carnehan, two ambitious former British Army sergeants who leave India to seek fortune in the remote region of Kafiristan (in modern-day Afghanistan). Believing the land untouched by white men since Alexander the Great, they use their military skills, rifles, and cunning to ally with local tribes, train an army, and eventually seize control. When Dravot survives an arrow wound unharmed, the locals proclaim him a god and the son of Alexander, granting him kingship and access to ancient treasures. The story explores themes of imperialism, hubris, and the corrupting influence of power as Dravot begins to believe his own legend, breaking a pact with Carnehan by deciding to marry a local woman named Roxanne, played by Shakira Caine. The revelation of his mortality leads to a tragic climax. John Huston spent nearly two decades trying to bring the project to life, with earlier casting considerations including Humphrey Bogart and Clark Gable. Filming took place primarily in the Atlas Mountains of Morocco to replicate the rugged Hindu Kush terrain, employing thousands of local extras. Connery and Caine’s real-life friendship contributed to the strong on-screen chemistry. The film received four Oscar nominations, including Best Adapted Screenplay, and both lead actors have named it among their favorites. This vintage article highlights the production and enduring legacy of one of Hollywood’s last great classic epics, blending adventure, comedy, and poignant critique.
