'What a shocker', said no-one ever.

Stand by for extensive & intensive muirburn on peat-rich moorland this autumn as grouse moor owners take advantage of opportunity to burn as much as possible as regulations delayed.

Climate emergency? Nah.

Yesterday the Scottish Government announced a further delay to the implementation of muirburn licencing.

That very same day, a muirburn in Aberdeenshire got out of control and started a wildfire.

We can’t afford any more delay. 👇

Centuries of overgrazing & muirburn for grouse moors mean Highland Scotland looks treeless & desolate. But it doesn't have to be this way. New film Scotland's Missing Forests went online y'day. Chuffed to see almost 10k views. www.youtube.com/watch?v=MuTV... @chrisgpackham.bsky.social

Please support this petition to ban driven grouse shooting which requires muirburning that contributes to climate breakdown & creates drainage issues that leads to flooding & erosion. @chrisgpackham.bsky.social @ruthtingay.bsky.social @markavery.bsky.social

"the practice of muirburn actually made no difference to the extent of the Dava megafire.
Muirburn dries out the land by killing off the vegetation and drying out the peat, making it less resistant to fire. leaves behind lots of dead stems of heather which which provide perfect fuel”Prof D MacMillan

EXCELLENT NEWS FOR ANIMALS

Scotland's landmark ban on the use of snares commences today (25/11/24). A full ban on the use of snares was passed by the Scottish Parliament in March 2024 as part of the Wildlife Management & Muirburn (Scotland) Act.

More muirburn last night. Weird how muirburn is touted as being useful as a firebreak when they use cutting of heather as an actual firebreak during muirburn. Not that they should be doing either in nesting season.

I was in the western Highlands for a long weekend, up to Applecross, Torridon and Gairloch. Little patches of deer-fenced scrub regenerating were refreshing but so much is just devastated, overgrazed, muirburn scars.
Can you see it?

The difference between full-on rewilding and, behind, sheep-farmed land.

The difference between life and death.

Seems Scot Gov more interested in appeasing the lairds than protecting the environment.

Don't be blind to your impact.
It's super dry conditions out there. Extensive wildfires have been raging in Galloway, Arran, and Assynt/Coigach, whilst muirburn continues in the Cairngorms.
