I don't think being in a difficult polycrisis means we can't multisolve. We need people to use their agency and make more sustainable, future-building decisions instead of wallowing and self-exempting because "times are hard." They're always going to be hard until we collectively change how we act.

From one mountainous state pummeled by climate-exacerbated flooding to those in the NC/TN mountains, I send love. And, because we need to pool creativity and knowledge, I send this, written after VT's 2023 flooding disaster. www.resilience.org/s...
Disaster Recovery Efforts Can Serve More than One Goal
There are as many ways to multisolve as there are places to try it. The point isn’t perfection. It’s to set out to recover quickly but mindfully, capturing as many co-benefits as possible along the way.

It's hard to know when to share "thoughts" after a disaster. Now feels very raw in VT as people are still assessing & reporting the damage & loss. But, when I wrote this after 2023's floods it felt "too late." So with a heavy heart I'll re-share it now. www.resilience.org/s...

Wanting to multisolve but not having time for listening & learning is like wanting to run a marathon but not having time for jogging. Or wanting psychological wellbeing but not having time for therapy or mindfulness.

One can't multisolve (or talk about multisolving) in a nice neat straight linear way. There are threads, and circles, and spirals. A pinch of systems thinking, a story about retrofits, a poem, a little James Baldwin, a lot of Dana Meadows, a tornado, a heatwave, a rain garden.

We don't get to choose whether or not to live in an interconnected system. We just do. What we get to choose is whether to work with that interconnection or to ignore and fight it. One of the ways to choose to work with interconnection (i.e. work with reality) is to multisolve.

Seen in Vermont. A reminder that we need to multisolve - including thinking about climate change adaptation while we work hard at climate change mitigation.
September 18, 2023 at 11:30 PM
Democratic leadership in Canada is moving backward on climate change. They are confirming the lies of the right wing Trumpians.
Its so sad.

We could be solving the populist concerns with dramatic climate action instead of seeing them as tradeoffs.. There's a multisolve here folks!!

I am now firmly in the camp of "Do not multisolve, do not multitask". I use AI and only ask one thing at time.

I think multitasking over multisolving is overrated.

Many excellent choices for 2024! Hard to pick one; in this moment, I’ll go for a focus on education / thinking outside the box & encouraging folks to multisolve (since we are in a polycrisis):

I'm always thinking about how everything is connected & interconnected & how to achieve maximum results from efficient effort.

This is from @bethsawin.bsky.social, written after Vermont's 2023 flooding, w suggestions on how to recover well on multiple fronts.

In places where people and groups see their respective needs as at odds with one another (rightly or wrongly), how do people wanting to multisolve (is that the verb) work with them & equip them to work with each other?

This reminded me of our amazing mayor, who before becoming mayor helped draft a community informed climate action plan & a carbon reduction fund that has helped move projects forward. I also a commitment to distributing leadership & empowering folks to “multisolve”

Mayors are making climate action personal. It's working.
As the Trump administration boosts fossil fuels and rolls back regulations, mayors are greening their cities — in more ways than one.

"Be a drop and trust there is an ocean behind you". It's easy to feel down these days, but Dr. Sawin always inspires me with pragmatic and active hope and motivation. We can multisolve these polycrises.
One good thing is that there are almost endless ways to take care of one other today while also making the future a safer and richer (measured in complexity, human and non-human not $$ lol). Those are the two urgent tasks now, yes? Isn't it cool that they so often go together?
July 7, 2025 at 1:42 PM
An excellent long thread well worth a few minutes of your time.

I’d add that we don’t just need to run mitigation and adaptation strategies in parallel, but find solutions that multisolve both (and more). Our problems are interconnected and if our solutions aren’t too, we’ll fall further behind.
And now: A thread regarding my thoughts on "1.5°C"--not only as a Paris Agreement target, but also re: relevance to recent #climate events & overlaps (or not) w/geophysical realities. (This was originally written as a response to a journalist, who used excerpts in their article.)

Looks like a terrific book. Cities create so many additional issues by seeking to solve one problem at a time, which often pits groups against each other (eg homeowners vs renters). We need systems approaches that seek to multisolve several issues
Elizabeth Sawin’s new book MULTISOLVING can’t promise a list of “50 simple things to make everything OK.” What it does offer are strategies to build solidarity between diverse groups, overcome powerful interests, and create lasting benefits for us all. Islandpress.org/Mult...
