Ancient Egypt. Late Dynastic to Ptolemaic period, c. 664-30 BC. A gorgeous little bright blue faience ushabti. Depicted mummiform, with crossed arms holding the symbolic pick and hoe. H: 66mm (2 1/2"), with vibrant blue glaze.

Book of the Dead of Taysnakht, daughter of Taymes

Taysnakht, dressed in a white tunic, worships Osiris, who is mummiform, falcon-headed, and wears the atef crown. The god is hugged by the goddess Imentet, personification of the West.

The Brooklyn Museum has two of these very fine shabti figures, made for a woman called Sati who appears to’ve been nobody special according to her titles (just Mistress of the House) but clearly possessed of great wealth given the quality of the shabtis. 🧵1/6

Ancient Egyptians believed #cats were magical creatures that brought good luck. The wealthy dressed them in jewels & fed them treats fit for royalty.

When the cats died, they were #mummified, like the statue 👇, & their owners shaved off their eyebrows as official mourning. #History #Art #Caturday

But by adjusting the copper colorants and even cobalt, the Egyptians could make blue, blue-green, yellow, et al. They could also make colorless faience but add a colored faience glaze on top, enabling multiple colors on an object. ALT text on each image below gives more info.
