A Comparative Survey of Historical <fc>DNA</fc> Degradation From Vertebrate Museum Specimens: Unexpected Utility of Fluid‐Preserved Specimens
Advances in museomics have expanded from dry and skeletal specimens to now include fluid-preserved material as a source of DNA. However, our understanding of patterns of DNA degradation across specim....

Animal domestication is associated with morphological, behavioural and physiological changes and, as was discovered more recently, changes in the gut microbiome 🦠
But what happens to other microbiomes?
Shared and genus-specific impact of domestication on mammal oral microbiomes revealed through museomics
Animal domestication involves genetic, behavioural and ecological changes, all of which also impact the host-associated microbial communities. Early studies reported diversity loss in the gut microbio...

Liver isn’t always the best tissue to sample either: skin, muscle or bone can perform better in older fluid-preserved specimens.

Hopefully useful for anyone planning to get DNA from museum collections!

Mainland populations are stable probably due to the high dispersal capabilities, but isolated populations on Gotland and the Arctic mountains show lower diversity and high differentiation.

This highlights the power of museomics for tracking real-time evolutionary dynamics in insects! 🐝✨
