I went from being a 16 year old excited to experience 2D fighters outside of just the Genesis TMNT TF and MMPR games I played with my brother growing up and the MvC2 I got to play a bit in an arcade at my friend's birthday party to being what one could fairly consider a black belt of the genre

Do they realize how long it takes to unlock the full roster in the Dreamcast port of MvC2?
Or how long the norms established by that one game rang through the genre? The sub-genre it created? Nen Impact came out over 25 years later and was still 3v3 with assists!

this reminds me of the old Dreamcast bootleg discs that would have Marvel 2, CVS2, 3rd Strike, SSF2 Turbo, and Puzzle Fighter on them because none of those were anywhere near big enough to take up a CD (at least once you compressed MVC2's audio)

I dont even like dbfz but i much prefer it over mvc2 just from how much mvc2s character balance limits playstyles. Not even in the sense of the top 3 being so good its that the middle to low tier all have like one extremely boring thing they do ad nauseum and the top tiers are all anti interaction

This would probably change on any given day except for MGS2 (so placed because of how central it is for me), Morrowind, and MvC2, but these all shaped both how I think about what is possible in games and how I think about art in general

For me personally I never came around on MVC2's OST mostly because the character themes from XMvsSF and MVC were so good.
Always felt like missed potential to me but it would probably be a memory issue to include all those old tracks in one game+new ones

My issue with a lot of "old game good vs new game bad" discourse is that it usually ends with ppl talking about how ppl have always complained about new games, "they called mvc2 a baby game too!" Etc etc, which yes true, but it also plays ignorant with the obvious design trends of the modern fighter

I had kids playing Star Wars on the playground telling me I wasn’t a real fan cause I’m a girl. Dudes in arcades throwing fits when you beat them at MVC2. Being followed and interrogated by other customers in comic shops. Assholes are not a new invention, they’ve been here the whole time.
