#mygalomorphae
I've just learned that some authorities describe the group Araneomorphae as 'true spiders', as distinct from Mygalomorphae (presumably fake spiders) like tarantulas and trap-door spiders, which have downward-pointing fangs.

Also, the original tarantulas are no longer part of the 'tarantula' group.

There are dozens of documented interactions across multiple species of tarantula & frog that suggest stable mutualism.

Some frogs even seem to have adapted "don't eat me" toxic secretions that are potent for spiders, which may be a sign of co-evolution between species.

Spider-domesticated frogs!
An extensive review of mutualistic and similar ecological associations involving tarantulas (Araneae: Theraphosidae), with a new hypothesis on the evolution of their hirsuteness
Mutualistic and similar ecological associations between tarantulas (Mygalomorphae: Theraphosidae) and other animals are reviewed. Such associations are found to occur in at least nine theraphosid s...

hey, it's a mygalomorphae!

it also depends on if they are Araneomorphae (true spiders) or Mygalomorphae (Tarantulas/trapdoors/funnelwebs etc.) Mygalomorphae, tend to live much longer (10,20,even 40 years for one female trapdoor spider) But the males sadly mature and pass a fair bit sooner than the males. 😔

Old pics. Female Linothele fallax (Curtain web) Whilst not tarantulas, they are also Mygalomorphae. I miss her. She was a stunner. From when I got her (about 1cm) to in her adult Queen glory! (Nearly 7")😍

Mygalomorphs are a group of stocky, sometimes giant spiders that include tarantulas. A team of scientists in Ecuador is trying to find and describe these animals before they disappear.

Hum, não sei se acho o segundo um bom nome, considerando que tem outras aranhas - inclusive Mygalomorphae - que tbm apresentam fiandeiras mais alongadas

it vaguely irritates me that in english, Mygalomorphae spiders are all called tarantulas...
because the true tarantula is a Lycosidae spider (specifically Lycosa tarantula)...

french has the distinction (mygale vs tarentule) and it makes sense!!

Adult female Linothele fallax. Not a tarantula, but still a Mygalomorphae. 🥰

They give them abdomen legs. ABDOMEN LEGS! Cephalothorax just wasted. A sticky web attack like a bolas? A mygalomorphae doing that? >:C

I think in Mygalomorphae the maxillae are more like hairy plates but I'll try to double check once I'm in the office today

Let's talk about Hypochilus!🧪 This small family of leggy, lampshade-webbed weirdos were long thought of as a "missing link" between the two main types of spiders, Mygalomorphae (tarantulas, trapdoor spiders, & their kin) and the "true spiders," Araneomorphae (93% of the spider species alive today).
Thanks to a tip from @ellipsoptera I found lampshade spiders! I'm not sure what I was expecting exactly, but they were large, leggy, and bizarre - a bit prehistoric, even. Fortunately their webs stand out, because they blend in well! Quite a sight. Glad I got to find some on my last day in NC! 🧪

Old pics. Liphistius ornatus "Suwat Ornate Armored Trapdoor Spider" These beauts are neither Mygalomorphae nor Araneomorphae. Instead they said 'screw evolution' and went their own way to become Mesothelae. I sadly only had this one for about 12 months before it matured as a male...
