Recent satellite imagery from Jan shows the resistance-aligned Kachin Independence Army establishing fortified frontlines on the outskirts of the Kachin capital, Myitkyina (close to Waingmaw town). For much of the war, the resistance has been asymmetrical. Now not as much.

And while US troops weren't on the ground at Imphal and Kohima there was a joint US-Chinese force to the east attacking Myitkyina, and a considerable amount of American airpower supplying the entire Allied effort.

Overnight, the military carried out airstrikes on KIA headquarters and shelled areas around Myitkyina, with explosions hitting civilian homes and causing heavy damage and casualties.

As of 9 PM tonight, the Irrawaddy River's water level has reached 987 centimeters the danger mark for potential flooding. In June 2024, it exceeded 1,400 cm, causing severe floods across most low-lying areas of Myitkyina and the worst hardship for residents in recent memory.
