*Niche critter profile*

We all love stag beetles, but do you know there are a few stag beetle genus that are myrmecophilous (evolved to live with ants or termites)? They are tiny but look unique and bizarre in a different way compared to their big and showy relatives!

Here are a few more portraits of the myrmecophilous clown beetle Haeterius brunneipennis, a guest of Formica wood ants. Thanks to Alexey Tishechkin for the species ID. Woodstock, NY.

Looks like activity is reaching critical mass here. I'm a biodiversity scientist studying beetle evolution. Currently on sabbatical at INaBio in Quito, otherwise a Clemson U. professor. Most posts will feature amazing beetles (like this myrmecophilous histerid), with a side of environmental ethics.

The myrmecophilous clown beetle Haeterius lives inside the nests of Formica wood ants. I found this specimen in a mixed colony of Formica sanguinea-group slave-making ants and their Formica fusca-group hosts in my garden. The beetle is just under 2mm long. Woodstock, NY.

🪲 Did you know that myrmecophilous rove beetles have been known for more than a century, and yet most species remain poorly investigated?

The first days at the @gfoesoc.bsky.social have already been amazing with a great show on Monday evening. I also had the opportunity to present our first results from the @monitant.bsky.social project on myrmecophilous diversity in wood ant nests. I'm already looking forward to the next few days.

NEW PAPER! Do 🐛 use rhythm to trick 🐜? We analysed vibroacoustic signals from ants and butterflies with different myrmecophily levels. Ants and highly associated species share regular rhythms — suggesting convergent adaptation in tight mutualisms.

How much do you know about myrmecophilous ant crickets? This article features a nice explainer, based on an article we published about Myrmecophilus acervorum!

Cricket that tricks ants into thinking it’s one of them was discovered in Latvia
The tiny crickets collect and wear the chemical markers of the ants, reducing ant aggression and disguising them as a member of the group.

The best kind of mutualism is the myrmecophilous kind, that's for sure.
